Music Box Christmas

When they were still teenagers, my Dad gave Mom a beautiful, blue music box, with a ballerina that spins to the music. As a young child, it was a special treat for me to wind that music box and watch the ballerina dance.  For a long time, that was the only music box we had.  Then, over time, Mom began to collect music boxes.  I'm not sure that she really intended to acquire such a large collection, but family members started giving them to her for special occasions after they realized how much she liked music boxes.

I don't collect music boxes, but I love them, too, just as my mother does.  As I was searching for music boxes on the internet recently, I was surprised that I couldn't find very many true music boxes.  Most contemporary music boxes are really snow globes that must be shaken to produce "snow," then wound to play the music.  Some of them are incredibly tacky, and some are exquisitely beautiful but, no matter what, they don't really do anything.  Something is missing.

In the same way, people may decorate their homes extensively (and expensively) for Christmas, buy gorgeous gifts for their family members, and prepare delicious goodies to share during the holiday season.  But, unless we truly celebrate Jesus' birthday as a major part of our Christmas festivities, something is definitely missing!  It may be a cliche, but it is still true that "Jesus is the reason for the season!"

This Christmas, I want to keep my eyes on Jesus, who came into the world as a baby and grew up to do more than anyone could ever have imagined.  Click on the YouTube link below to hear Music Box Christmas, which incorporates a music box theme to express my thoughts about the true meaning of Christmas.

Music Box Christmas
Janet Bauer, December 2011

We worship and praise You, we sing and adore You,
Baby Jesus, born of Mary, asleep on the hay.
We sing to Messiah, the promised of ages,
Baby Jesus, our Redeemer, asleep where You lay,
In a manger, in a stable, not a blanket nor a cradle;
Just the shepherds and the angels
Were there on that day.
Now we sing along with their joyful song,
Praise our God above, sing our song of love;
We praise You today.

We worship and praise You, we sing and adore You,
Holy Father, God Almighty, we bless You this day.
We sing to the Spirit, our Helper and Comfort,
And to Jesus, blessed Savior; oh, what can we say?
First a babe so small, then You conquered all,
Took our sin away, died, our debt to pay,
Rose on that third day.
Now we sing along with the joyful song,
Praise our God above, sing our song of love;
We praise You alway.

Now we sing along with the joyful song,
Praise our God above, sing our song of love;
            We praise You today.
            We praise You alway.
