Fall Glasses

No doubt about it, this has been a gorgeous fall in the Nebraska panhandle. October has been filled with balmy, sunny days, most with just a slight breeze to moderate the sun's heat.  Light jackets have been appreciated in the brisk, fall mornings, but shirt sleeves are just fine in the afternoons.  Morning or afternoon, even recess duty has been a pleasure.  The only problem is what to wear when the mornings start out around 40 degrees, but warm up into the seventies by early afternoon.

It has been so much fun for my students to rake the leaves into piles that just beg for someone to jump into them.  Even walking or rolling a wheelchair through the leaves has brought smiles of wonder to those little faces.  The sound of crisp leaves crunching underfoot is necessarily short-lived, but quite exhilarating.

This year, we have all been amazed to watch the swirling leaves play tag with the wind just outside our classroom windows.  And, what fun it is to catch a falling leaf and bring it to the teacher to add to our Discovery Center inside.

The best part of fall, for many, is the beautifully colored leaves.  I don't remember another fall, here in Gering, that has brought such vivid colors. The reds and oranges, yellow and purples, have been brighter than usual this year, and long-lasting, too.  I've heard many comments about that this year.

Since my eye surgery in March, I've had to wear sunglasses whenever I venture outdoors.  Just this week, I realized that those sunglasses color my world brighter than ever.  The  sumac is redder, pale yellow leaves become golden in the sunlight,  and drab brown leaves take on a shimmering orange tinge.  So, for me, a wonderfully vibrant fall has become even more dazzling.  Who would think that my troublesome vision could lead to such a wealth of fall color?

God does that for us sometimes.  He takes even the worst experiences and brings something unexpectedly beautiful as a result.  Yet again, we are blessed.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.  Romans 8:28
