Ten Things I Love About My Church

No church is perfect, because churches are made up of sinful human beings, people who struggle every day to do things God's way.  Sometimes we seem to be successful, but often, we fail, seek God's forgiveness, and start over again.  The good news is that God is always ready to forgive those who trust in him, over and over, because Jesus has already paid the penalty for our transgressions.  When God looks at us, he no longer sees our sin; instead, he sees Jesus!

My family attends Calvary Memorial Church in Gering.  Almost five years ago, our future son-in-law, Andy, invited us to come to his family's church, saying that he thought we would like it.  He was right.  Here, in no particular order, are ten things that I love about this church:
  • The pastors, church leaders, and people truly care about each other.
  • The church leaders and members value prayer, and pray together every time they meet for any reason.
  • The Bible is read, preached, studied, quoted, and hailed as God's Word.
  • The music is eclectic, and the musicians are competent and content to remain in the background as they lead the people to praise God together, wholeheartedly.
  • Money is rarely an issue, since many people give to God freely, from their "first fruits."
  • When one church leader made a mistake, he admitted it, apologized openly, and sought forgiveness from God and the ones he had wronged.  I've noticed that most of the church leaders are eager to serve the God they love, humbly and diligently.
  • The church and the people in it make an effort to reach out to the surrounding community, providing for people's physical and spiritual needs, and inviting their friends and neighbors to join us for worship.
  • The church prayerfully and financially supports numerous missionaries in our country and throughout the world, inviting them to visit whenever they can.  The people in the church know their missionaries personally!
  • The children and youth are treasured, nurtured, and patiently lead to saving faith in Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
  • All people are welcomed, regardless of ethnicity, age, social standing, ability or disability, or religious background.

No church is perfect, and neither is Calvary.  But, my family is blessed to worship there.  If you are searching for a church where you will feel at home, and if you live in or near Gering, why don't you come and see for yourself?
